Kamakazi Biker

Day 3: June 1st

Jeanne is working part time right now but will be full time in a couple weeks. While she was at work, I built a fort with the boys. Multiple rooms, a pantry for food, place for weapons, and a stable of sorts for the stuffed horse. Then we made a caterpillar out or recycled materials.

When Jeanne got home, we went on a looong bike ride/ tour of the town center and northwestern Milan. Max is quite the kamikazi biker. Just out of training wheels, he was pretty wobbly but peddled with reckless abandon….taking out some kneecaps and biting some curbs. We rode through the Central Park of Milan, Parco Sempione, by a huge monumental arch Napoleon, through the castle, Casgtello Sforzesco, on the other end of the park that is now filled with museums. It was massive....exactly like what you would envision in a fairy tale. I'm hoping to go by foot soon and take some pictures!

When we approached one of the most elegant streets in Milan with pedestrian traffic only, Via Dante*, we stopped for Gelato. This little shop had an intricately designed motif of warm colored mosaic tiles. It was impressive to me how much money they spent on the mosaic designs in just an ice cream shop. Italians tend to pay so much attention to detail, no matter what the status of the space or the building is. It looked like something we would put in a hotel suite. Two young men in flip flops started playing the wedding march on their violins nearby. The perfect weather, the music filling the air, the pistachio Gelato in my hand, and all the beautifully designed buildings surrounding me.....I lost my words and just let it all soak in.

After polishing off the Gelato, we headed to the Duomo. I don’t know that I’ve ever seen that much detail on an exterior facade…and it was massive! I am going to go back and climb the stairs to the very top next week.* Beside the Duomo is the first outdoor mall, Galleria Vittoria Emanuele*. It was part of an urban renewal project in 1865, connecting two Piazzas. The shiny black store signs with gold lettering boasts the likes of Prada, Gucci, Mercedes….and McDonalds…how bizarre! In the center of the mall is a bull mosaic. For good luck, I waited my turn to put my heel on the bull’s balls and turn clockwise three times. I’ll go back often for good measure;)

*I am going back to these places soon to take pictures....couldn't quite juggle the camera and bike.
